Chelsea’s new signing Morgan Rogers says his love for football, the opportunity to work under head coach Xabi Alonso and the chance to reunite with close friend Cole Palmer convinced him to make the move to Stamford Bridge.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder completed his transfer to the Blues and said he is excited to begin the next chapter of his career with a club he believes has enormous potential.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official media after his unveiling, Rogers said he has always tried to play with freedom and enjoyment despite the pressures of elite football.
“I always remind myself that I do it for the love of it. When I was younger, I just remember being free, playing with joy and having a smile on my face,” he said.
Rogers revealed that working under Alonso was a major attraction, describing the Spaniard’s football philosophy as one that matches the way he wants to play.
He also admitted he is looking forward to linking up with England teammate Cole Palmer, with whom he has shared a friendship for more than a decade.
“He’s been ringing and texting me non-stop in the last few days,” Rogers said with a smile.
The midfielder paid tribute to his family for helping him reach the highest level of the game, saying their unwavering support allowed him to express himself and enjoy football from a young age.
Rogers also reflected on the setbacks he faced during loan spells earlier in his career, including periods at Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool, saying those experiences strengthened his mentality.
“My loans were massive for me. They taught me how to deal with adversity, not playing, fighting to win games and using setbacks as motivation,” he said.
He credited his older brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea, for helping him develop the mental resilience needed to cope with the demands and scrutiny of top-level football.
Rogers believes those experiences have shaped him into the player he is today and says he is determined to make a difference for Chelsea as the club prepares for the new season.
