The resignation of former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson has created challenges for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, with Johnson telling the Pretoria-based inquiry that she can no longer access certain outstanding documents requested by investigators.
Johnson, who is still appearing before the commission as a witness, said her departure from IDAC means she no longer has the authority to obtain records through official channels.
She told evidence leaders that she had ensured the necessary presidential minute was shared with the commission and properly signed before leaving her position.
“Since yesterday, I do not hold any official position; I am not the IDAC head,” Johnson said, explaining that her resignation had affected her ability to procure documents in the same way she would have while serving as head of the directorate.
Johnson indicated that Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head of investigations Matthew Sisoko would now be the appropriate official to approach for certain documents.
The development came as evidence leader Advocate Mahlape Sello questioned Johnson over differences between versions of her affidavit submitted to the commission.
Sello raised concerns over why references to the Political Killing Task Team (PKTT) appeared in one version of the Section 27 affidavit but were absent from another version submitted before the inquiry.
The questioning forms part of the commission’s investigation into the conduct of officials within IDAC and broader concerns surrounding the handling of corruption-related investigations.
Johnson’s continued testimony is expected to focus on the operations of the Investigating Directorate, internal processes, and the relationship between various law enforcement bodies involved in combating corruption.
The Madlanga Commission continues to examine evidence from current and former officials as it seeks to establish whether there were failures, interference or misconduct within state investigative structures.
