South Africa’s improving fiscal performance is strengthening expectations that the country could soon regain greater confidence from international credit-rating agencies, with Goldman Sachs pointing to stronger government revenue as a key driver.

The investment bank says higher-than-expected tax collections have provided much-needed relief for public finances, helping to narrow budget pressures and improve perceptions of the country’s economic management.

The positive outlook follows recent rating improvements, including Fitch’s upgrade and Moody’s move to place South Africa’s outlook on a positive footing.

A return to investment-grade status would represent a major milestone after years of economic challenges, potentially reducing borrowing costs, improving access to capital and attracting more international investors.

However, Goldman Sachs cautioned that maintaining the momentum will depend on continued reforms, particularly in fixing energy challenges, improving logistics networks and strengthening government finances.
