Six people have been shot and killed in two separate incidents in Kanana Farm (Weilers Farm) and Thulamtwana, south of Johannesburg, on Sunday morning, with police investigating whether the attacks are linked.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to Newsnote said gunmen first opened fire on two men near a tavern before driving to another location, where they allegedly shot and killed four more men.
Residents believe the attacks are connected, citing a recent surge in violent crime in the area.
“No one wants to talk to the media, especially in public, but we believe the incidents are linked because there have been shootings around this area over the past few weeks,” said one resident who asked not to be identified.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed that four men, aged between 26 and 45, were killed at a tavern in Thulamtwana.
“In Thulamtwana, four men aged between 26 and 45 were fatally shot at a tavern. A woman was also shot and injured. She was transported to a medical facility. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle,” said Muridili.
She added that, in a separate incident in Weilers Farm, two men were found fatally shot at the corner of Fountain Drive and Morning Star Street.
No arrests have been made, and the motive for the shootings remains under investigation. Police are also investigating whether the two incidents are connected.
