Mamelodi Sundowns have sent a warning to Orlando Pirates ahead of the MTN8 final after producing a composed comeback to overturn a first-leg deficit and book their place in the showpiece.
The Brazilians entered the second leg trailing 1-0 but responded with a commanding 3-0 victory at Chatsworth Stadium, completing a 3-3 aggregate turnaround and advancing on the away-goals rule.
More than the scoreline, the performance highlighted Sundowns’ ability to remain patient under pressure before eventually breaking down their Durban-based opponents.
Head coach Hugo Cardoso believes that mentality was crucial to the comeback.
“We knew what we had to do. The first goal would be very emotionally positive. We knew that we had to circulate the ball a lot until we found the way there, and from there the drop in their energy would happen,” Cardoso said.
The first goal changed the mood of the contest, but Sundowns knew they needed another breakthrough to take control.
“We also knew that the second goal would kill the game or put it in a very difficult [position], because then the advantage would be on our side. And we worked on that, of course,” Cardoso added.
Sundowns refuse to panic

Cardoso was delighted with the response from his players.
“I think the team deserves congratulations today. Positive mindset, the right attitude that we established, and very good behaviours on the pitch. I’m very happy,” he said.

Sundowns will face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final after the Buccaneers dismantled Sekhukhune United 4-0 on aggregate.
Pirates won the first leg 1-0 before completing the job with a 3-0 victory in the return fixture.
The result sets up a heavyweight final between two of South Africa’s most decorated and star-studded clubs, with both sides entering the showpiece on the back of convincing semi-final performances.
For Sundowns, the comeback provides valuable momentum and belief. For Pirates, it represents an opportunity to extend their impressive run and underline their dominance in WAFA-WAFA.

Cardoso already looking ahead
Despite the excitement surrounding the final, Cardoso is refusing to allow his players to lose focus.
Sundowns still have another challenge to navigate before they can turn their full attention to Pirates.
“But, well, we have to come here again in one week, and in the middle let’s prepare for Milford,” Cardoso said.
