Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and four co-accused are expected back in the Johannesburg High Court for the continuation of a trial-within-a-trial.
The accused face charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering in connection with the alleged attempted assassinations of socialite Tebogo Thobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni and music producer Seunkie Mokubung.
The main trial has been put on hold while the court determines whether evidence obtained during the arrest of first accused Musa Kekana can be admitted.
Kekana has challenged the State’s use of some of the evidence allegedly obtained by police during his arrest.
Police officers who arrested Kekana have already testified and maintained that the arrest was conducted lawfully.
The State is expected to call another witness as proceedings continue.
The trial-within-a-trial is focused on whether the disputed evidence was lawfully obtained and can be used in the prosecution’s case.
The court’s determination will shape the evidence available to the State when the main trial resumes.
