A 53-year-old scholar transport driver was shot and killed in Westbury, Johannesburg, shortly after dropping off schoolchildren on Monday morning.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said police received a complaint of a shooting at around 08:10.

“The driver had just dropped off the children and was preparing to park his vehicle at a flat in Westbury when two unknown men approached him and opened fire.

“The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics,” Sibeko said.

The suspects allegedly fled the scene in a blue Volkswagen Polo.

Police have not yet established a motive for the killing.

Sophiatown police have opened a murder case and launched a manhunt for the two suspects. No arrests have been made.

The shooting comes amid ongoing concern over violent crime in the area. Four young adults were killed in Westbury last month, while two others were wounded.

Anyone with information that could assist police in identifying or locating the suspects is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
