The North West Department of Education has increased its matric pass rate target from 95% to 97%.
MEC Dr Desbo Mohono announced the new target at the two-day Strategic Lekgotla in Klerksdorp.
In her opening address, the MEC instructed the Superintendent-General to outline and enforce performance targets across all four districts.
“If those targets are not met, that district must explain to us. Why should we keep them when they cannot ensure this is happening? I am not saying you must abuse or insult people; just make sure the work is done,” said Dr Mohono.
The North West province achieved an 88.49% pass rate for the Class of 2025, retaining its fourth position nationally.
Furthermore, the MEC expressed concern about the state of foundational learning in the province, describing it as a “depressing picture” that she expects to be addressed with urgency.
The Lekgotla comes as the Class of 2026 sits its preliminary examinations, which began on 27 August and are scheduled to conclude on 23 September.
Dr Mohono concluded by warning against complacency, resistance and non-compliance with the Department.
She cautioned that such conduct would be detrimental to learner outcomes and negatively affect the future of young people.
