Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has officially opened the 2027 NSFAS application cycle, with prospective students given until 31 October 2026 to apply for financial assistance.
Manamela launched the application cycle on Friday in Parktown, Johannesburg, saying the process had been strengthened following a period of significant institutional changes at NSFAS.
He said the 2027 cycle would include improved data systems, automated document verification, electronic document signing and a modernised student-support environment.
NSFAS will also strengthen the verification of student registration and banking details through collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs.
“Applying early gives you time to verify your information, submit outstanding documentation and seek assistance if you encounter challenges,” Manamela said.
Funding outcomes for successful applicants are expected to be communicated in December, ahead of registration for the 2027 academic year.
The minister said outreach teams would be deployed across provinces, districts, rural areas, townships and marginalised communities to help eligible learners and prospective students with their applications.
Manamela also highlighted plans to strengthen funding for students who fall into the so-called “missing middle” — those whose household income is above the NSFAS bursary threshold but who may still struggle to afford higher education.
He said the government was developing a loan scheme as an additional funding option for eligible students who do not qualify for NSFAS bursaries.
“The loan scheme expands the funding system beyond the traditional bursary model, providing an opportunity for students who might otherwise face financial exclusion,” he said.
The loans will be repayable according to the applicable terms and conditions.
Manamela also urged young people to consider opportunities at public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
Applications for the 2027 academic year at public TVET colleges close on 30 September 2026.
The minister cautioned prospective students that applying for NSFAS funding does not guarantee admission to a university, TVET college or a particular qualification.
“Application to NSFAS does not guarantee access to your chosen area of study,” he said, urging students to apply directly to institutions as well.
The 2027 NSFAS application cycle was launched under the theme: “NSFAS 2027: Ready to Fund the Future.”
