North West MEC for Public Works and Roads Elizabeth Mokua has welcomed the Construction Industry Development Board’s (CIDB) contribution to strengthening the business capabilities and competitiveness of contractors in the province.

Mokua was speaking at the launch of the Certificate in Construction Management Programme in Rustenburg, an initiative aimed at equipping contractors with the management, technical and business skills required to operate more effectively in an increasingly competitive construction market.

The MEC said the long-term sustainability of the construction industry depends not only on creating opportunities for contractors, but also on ensuring that businesses have the capacity to compete for work, manage projects effectively and grow sustainably.

She highlighted skills development, sound management practices, financial and operational capability, and institutional development as critical components of building resilient construction businesses.

“The construction sector is becoming increasingly dynamic and competitive, requiring contractors to continuously strengthen their capabilities,” Mokua said.

She noted that the programme addresses some of the challenges facing contractors by investing in the professional and managerial skills needed to improve business performance and project delivery.

Mokua also commended the CIDB for recognising that contractor development requires sustained investment beyond access to construction opportunities. Building stronger management capabilities, she said, can help contractors improve their operations, strengthen their competitiveness and position their businesses for sustainable growth.

The Certificate in Construction Management Programme is expected to provide participating contractors with practical knowledge and skills to improve project management, business operations and overall organisational performance.

The initiative also highlights the economic importance of developing a stronger local contractor base capable of participating meaningfully in the construction value chain.

Mokua said continued collaboration between government, industry institutions and contractors will be important in creating an environment that supports enterprise development and enables emerging businesses to build the capacity required to compete in the construction sector.

The provincial launch is also intended to raise awareness of the programme and reinforce the government’s commitment to developing a more capable, professional and competitive contractor base in the North West.
