The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has cleared another legal hurdle in its bid to recover assets linked to an alleged irregular R27 million Gauteng government tender involving ANC politician Pule Mabe.
The Special Tribunal dismissed Mabe’s application to overturn a preservation order placed on his assets, allowing the SIU’s civil recovery proceedings to continue.
The preserved assets include a Porsche Carrera and property in Steyn City.
The SIU alleges Mabe unlawfully benefited from a Gauteng government contract awarded to his company, Enviro Mobi, for the supply of three-wheel waste collection vehicles.
The investigation was completed in 2024 and the matter was subsequently referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Mabe and his associates were arrested in October 2024 and are facing criminal proceedings at the Palm Ridge Specialised Court.
Mabe had argued that the SIU should wait for the criminal case to conclude before pursuing his assets.
The tribunal rejected that argument, finding that his application lacked merit and would delay the recovery process.
The SIU welcomed the ruling, which means its efforts to recover the allegedly tainted assets can proceed while the criminal case continues.
