The Klerksdorp Wastewater Treatment Plant has remained dysfunctional for about three years, with vandalism and fire contributing to the deterioration of the critical facility.

The situation was highlighted during an oversight visit by Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation Jack Bloom on Monday, amid continued concerns about untreated wastewater entering the Skoonspruit and eventually flowing into the Vaal River.

The plant has reportedly been non-operational since 2023. An oversight visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in May also found untreated wastewater flowing directly into the Skoonspruit.

Officials indicated that substantial funding would be required to refurbish the facility and restore its operations.

The condition of the plant has previously been raised as part of wider concerns over the deterioration of wastewater infrastructure in Matlosana, with vandalism identified as one of the factors contributing to the damage.

Recent reports have also highlighted pollution affecting the Skoonspruit and other waterways that feed into the Vaal River, increasing concerns about the environmental impact of failing wastewater infrastructure.

During Monday’s visit, Bloom observed the extent of the damage at the Klerksdorp facility, including the effects of previous vandalism and fire.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is now considering options to rehabilitate the plant and restore its operations.

The Department is expected to closely monitor the rehabilitation process to ensure that work progresses and that the facility is eventually returned to operation.

The developments come as concerns over wastewater pollution in Matlosana continue to place pressure on authorities to address failing sanitation infrastructure and restore essential services.

The rehabilitation of the plant will be closely watched by communities and authorities as efforts continue to address the impact of untreated wastewater on local waterways.
