Gauteng police have warned against violence and unlawful conduct during anti-immigration demonstrations in Johannesburg’s central business district after four people were arrested on Friday.

Gauteng police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said the suspects were believed to have led the protest and allegedly encouraged others to engage in criminal activity. They face charges including inciting violence.

Police fired rubber bullets earlier in the day to disperse protesters gathered near the KwaMai-Mai precinct, following a march from the Constitutional Court during which demonstrators chanted against foreign nationals and President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Although the crowd has since dispersed, police remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any further unrest.

Mthombeni cautioned demonstrators that participation in a large crowd would not shield individuals from accountability for alleged criminal acts, including looting and property damage.

He said police would continue to take action against those who break the law, warning protesters that they would be held individually responsible for their conduct.
