An audio recording allegedly featuring businessman Serge Cabonge discussing his dealings with another businessman identified as Morgan was played at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday during former deputy national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya’s bail application.
In the recording, Cabonge alleges that he was used to facilitate a project involving Morgan but was not paid after money was transferred to another person.
Cabonge claims in the conversation that the person involved had misrepresented his role in the project and later threatened to implicate him.
“He used me to knock Morgan, you understand?” Cabonge says in the recording.
He goes on to allege that Morgan gave money to the person he was referring to, but that he received nothing.
“I never even get anything,” he says.
During the conversation, Cabonge also refers to a person he calls “General” and alleges that the individual had threatened to tell Morgan that Cabonge was responsible for bringing the project to him.
Cabonge further claims that he distanced himself from the matter because he did not trust the person involved, whom he accuses of being a killer.
The allegations in the recording have not been independently verified.
The audio was played as part of the evidence presented during Sibiya’s bail proceedings. The recording’s contents and the identities of all the people referred to in the conversation should be distinguished from any findings established by the court.
Sibiya is facing charges relating to the alleged rape of an 18-year-old and the sexual grooming of a 16-year-old. He denies the allegations.
His bail application has been postponed to Wednesday to allow further evidence to be presented. He remains in custody.
