Two African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) members have been killed and five other people, including a 12-year-old, injured in a shooting in Katlehong North, Ekurhuleni.
The shooting occurred in Sophangisa Street at about 6.50pm on Tuesday, as the victims were returning from a memorial service for an ANC member who was shot last week.
The memorial service was held at Mogobeng Primary School.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), it is alleged that a man opened fire on the group.
Seven people were shot during the incident. Two men, aged 23 and 21, were declared dead at the scene. The deceased have been identified as ANCYL members.
The five injured victims, aged between 12 and 27, were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili says the suspect handed himself over following the shooting and is currently in custody.
“The case has been assigned to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) for further investigation.
The suspect faces charges of murder and attempted murder,” she said.
Police have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or whether it is linked to the shooting of the ANC member last week.
The investigation is ongoing.
