Controversial businessman and former African National Congress (ANC) North West regional treasurer Suliman Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday night after failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

The 49-year-old was detained shortly before he was due to board an international flight, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed. She said Carrim was arrested for failing to appear before the commission.

Carrim was expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday, although authorities had not released further details about the proceedings at the time of reporting.

Previous testimony examined business dealings

Carrim previously testified before the Madlanga Commission about his business dealings with businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

During his testimony, Carrim discussed a loan of approximately R10 million made to Matlala. His financial dealings and related transactions subsequently came under further scrutiny from the commission.

The inquiry has continued to examine matters connected to the individuals and business relationships under investigation. Carrim’s arrest marks a further development in proceedings linked to his participation in the inquiry.

Further legal developments awaited

Authorities had not disclosed further details about the specific circumstances surrounding Carrim’s failure to appear or whether additional charges would follow.

His expected court appearance was due to provide an opportunity for the matter to proceed through the judicial process. Further information about the case, including any court decisions or additional allegations, remained outstanding.

The arrest follows increased scrutiny of Carrim’s activities in connection with the commission’s investigation. The legal proceedings are expected to clarify the consequences of his failure to appear.
