The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has withdrawn charges of possession of dangerous drugs against Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, before he entered a plea.

Mugabe’s lawyer, Simbarashe Mukwekwezeka, said his client was driving a vehicle without number plates when he picked up his friend, Max Mugaba, on their way to a barbershop.

According to the lawyer, Mugabe was unaware that Mugaba allegedly had 72 grammes of mbanje, commonly known as cannabis, in his bag.

“Unbeknown to him, his friend allegedly had 72 grammes of mbanje in his bag. They were stopped by police officers who noticed the unregistered vehicle which they were driving,” Mukwekwezeka said.

He explained that police officers searched the vehicle, leading to the alleged discovery of the drugs.

The prosecution subsequently withdrew the drug possession charges against Mugabe before he entered a plea.

However, the case against Mugaba is continuing, with prosecutors proceeding with their case against him over the alleged drugs.

The withdrawal of the charges against Mugabe marks a development in the case, while the legal proceedings involving his friend remain ongoing.

Further details about the case are expected as the proceedings against Mugaba continue.
