Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have little room for error as they prepare for decisive home fixtures that could determine their progress in African football, with both sides under pressure to deliver improved performances.

Sundowns were held to a goalless draw by Angolan side Wiliete S.C. in their CAF Champions League second-round, first-leg encounter, while Chiefs suffered a 1-0 defeat against Zambia’s Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The results have left both South African clubs needing positive outcomes on home soil, with supporters expecting stronger displays from their teams.

For Sundowns, the challenge is to turn territorial dominance into goals after failing to find the net away from home. Coach Miguel Cardoso has acknowledged the need for a more aggressive attacking approach in Friday’s return leg.

“We need to be stronger than we were. We need to be more aggressive, we need to be more offensive,” Cardoso said, admitting his side was unhappy with the first-leg result.

The Pretoria-based club will also be monitoring the fitness of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and midfielder Teboho Mokoena ahead of the encounter. Williams missed the first leg after a training-ground knock, while Mokoena was substituted after experiencing discomfort in a previously injured ligament.

Cardoso remains hopeful that both players will be available, although Mokoena’s condition requires further assessment.

Chiefs face a different challenge after their defeat in Zambia. Amakhosi must produce a more convincing attacking performance at Moses Mabhida Stadium to overturn the deficit and keep their continental ambitions alive.

The team’s recent struggles have frustrated supporters, increasing the pressure on coach Fernando da Cruz and his players to respond.

Da Cruz has urged fans to support the team, insisting that Chiefs remain capable of progressing.

“We need them at home to push us because our team is capable of winning this game and qualifying,” he said.

Chiefs face Red Arrows at 18:00 in Durban, before Sundowns take on Wiliete at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria at 20:00.

With qualification at stake, Friday’s matches will test the resilience, attacking quality and composure of both South African sides as they seek to avoid early exits from continental competition.
