The N12 freeway has been closed in both directions between Klipspruit Valley Road (K43) and Abubakar Asvat Drive near Lenasia following renewed protests and reports of vehicles being stoned.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said protesters had resumed barricading roads with burning tyres and debris, despite earlier efforts to clear and reopen the affected routes.

“Despite earlier efforts to clear and reopen the roads, rioting has flared up again,” Fihla said in a traffic advisory issued at 11.25pm on Monday.

He warned that the unrest posed an immediate threat to motorists, with reports of passing vehicles being stoned.

Law enforcement officers have been deployed to contain the unrest, protect motorists and secure the affected area.

Fihla urged motorists to avoid the N12 between Klipspruit Valley Road and Abubakar Asvat Drive and use alternative routes, including the R554 (Nirvana Drive), Golden Highway (R553), Impala Road (R558), Chris Hani Road and the main road through Eldorado Park.

Motorists have also been warned not to drive through closed intersections or areas where crowds have gathered.

Those already in the vicinity have been advised to lock their doors, close their windows, remain vigilant and follow instructions from law enforcement officers.

The renewed protests follow demonstrations by residents of Nana’s Farm informal settlement, who are demanding access to basic services, including water and electricity.

The latest unrest is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions for motorists travelling between Lenasia and surrounding areas.

The JMPD said further updates would be issued as emergency teams work to secure the affected stretch of the freeway.
