The Durban High Court has imposed strict conditions on demonstrations organised by March and March, restricting protests to between 9am and 4pm and prohibiting participants from carrying weapons or covering their faces.
The interim order follows a government application raising allegations of violence, intimidation and looting linked to the group’s demonstrations in Durban.
The government approached the court over concerns surrounding the protests, seeking restrictions on the group’s activities.
However, Judge Peter Olsen emphasised that the interim ruling does not amount to a finding of wrongdoing against March and March or its leaders. The allegations have yet to be determined by the court.
The matter is expected to return to court on 18 January 2027. Replying affidavits are due to be submitted by 11 January.
March and March has distanced itself from the alleged violence and intimidation associated with the demonstrations.
The court’s interim restrictions will remain in place while the legal proceedings continue.
