Voters across South Africa can expect hot temperatures and possible thunderstorms as they head to the polls on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

SAWS has forecast above-normal temperatures across several parts of the country, with weather conditions expected to vary from one region to another.

According to the Service, the seasonal outlook, influenced by the developing El Niño weather pattern, suggests that parts of the country are likely to experience below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures.

However, isolated showers and thundershowers remain possible in some areas.

“The seasonal forecast, influenced by the developing El Niño weather pattern, indicates that parts of the country are likely to receive below-normal rainfall and experience above-normal temperatures. However, showers and thundershowers may still occur in some areas,” the Service said in its statement.

Parts of the North West, Northern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga are expected to experience extremely hot conditions, while isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are forecast for parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

SAWS has urged voters to take the weather forecast into consideration when planning their journeys to polling stations, particularly in areas where afternoon thunderstorms are expected.

“Voters are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly, particularly in areas where afternoon thunderstorms are expected. On official Election Day, Wednesday, 4 November 2026, fine and warm to very hot conditions are expected over the central and western parts of the country,” the statement read.

Members of the public are also encouraged to take precautions against heat exposure by staying hydrated, wearing appropriate clothing and carrying umbrellas where necessary.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution when travelling in wet weather conditions.

SAWS has indicated that it will continue to monitor weather conditions and issue updates as necessary ahead of and during the election period.
