EFF leader Julius Malema has blamed the ANC’s decision to enter into a Government of National Unity (GNU) with the DA for the latter’s strong performance in Wednesday’s Local Government Elections.
Malema was briefing the media at the Results Operations Centre (ROC) in Midrand.
He suggested that the ANC’s political arrangement with the DA may have influenced voter behaviour, contributing to a shift in electoral support.
Malema argued that voters were not necessarily persuaded by the DA itself, but rather by the ANC’s decision to work with its former political opponent in the national government.
“Straight into bed with the enemy. Comrades, there is no DA that stole votes. Our people voted for DA,” he said.
“To say DA stole votes, you are lying. DA did not steal votes. Our people decided to go in bed with the enemy because the ANC said to them in 2024, it is nice to sleep with the enemy.
“The ANC said that. And people said in 2026, if the ANC can work with them, sit with them in Cabinet, why not vote for them? Because anyway, even them, they are voting for them by appointing them in Cabinet. That is the psychology of our people. And those are the repercussions we are suffering from.”
With vote counting nearing completion, the DA has emerged as the largest party in several metropolitan municipalities and retained its outright majority in the City of Cape Town.
