Political parties are taking stock of their performance following this week’s local government elections where smaller formations appear to have more gains while the two biggest parties saw a decline in support.

Among those that have had a successful election is the FF Plus, which has grown across the country, including doubling its support in the North West province.

The FF Plus is now the official opposition in  Kgetlengrievier Local Municipality, and its deputy leader in the North West, De Wet Nel, said this was a welcome milestone.

“We gained more councillors in different municipalities. In Madibeng we went from two to four seats, in Rustenburg we went from one to three seats, in JB Marks we went from six to nine, and in Kgetlengrievier we are the official opposition, we went from one to two seats.

“Even in municipalities where we didn’t have any councillors before, we managed to gain seats there now. So our growth has more than doubled and it’s looking extremely good for us. We will make sure that we hold everyone accountable in this province,” Nel said.

With elections done and dusted, it is now up to political parties to make arrangements on how to govern all the hung municipalities.
