Malema celebrates as the ANC loses its majority in more councils

Economic Freedom Fighters leader, Julius Malema, says he is happy that the ANC has been pushed down by getting below 50% of the votes in local government elections.

Malema said when the EFF was formed in 2013, the party leadership’s mandate was to bring down the ANC’s control of the government.

The EFF’s CIC, addressed a media briefing at the IEC Results Operations Centre in Pretoria on Thursday, before final results were officially announced. It was, however, clear at the time that the ANC had lost significantly.

In the final results the ANC achieved a majority in 161 municipalities, the DA in 13, while the IFP scored a majority in 10 municipalities.

“The strategic objective is that the ruling party of thieves and gangsters that have turned against black people must get off power. We said this when we formed the EFF in Marikana…that the elephant is too big, but we’ll eat it bit by bit,” Malema said.

Malema stressed that the EFF should not be compared to regional parties.

“You must compare us with people who are national and we are only three by the way in South Africa, it’s the ANC, DA and EFF. IFP is in KwaZulu-Natal and you know when it was formed it was a cultural group,” he said.

Malema welcomed the way the  Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) conducted the elections, adding that there are no perfect elections.
