An improvement on gender-representativity as three women make it to the ANC’s Top 7

President Cyril Ramaphosa retained his position, Gwede Mantashe also cemented his place after being re-elected as Chairperson and Fikile Mbalula replaced suspended Ace Magashule as Secretary General.

There was an improvement in gender representation for the first in the top positions with three women – Gwen Ramokgopa elected Treasurer-General, and Nomvula Mokonyane and Maropene Ramokgopa as first and second Deputy Secretary-Generals.

Former ANC Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile won with a landslide victory and beat Justice and Correctional Service Ronald Lamola for the party’s Deputy President position with 2 178 votes to 315 at the results announced on Monday in Nasrec.

Eastern Cape Chairperson Oscar Mabuyane came a close second with 1 858 votes.

However, an undeterred Lamola came out of the Nasrec conference after the announcement of the results and told journalists that he supports the new leadership.

“I do think that it is clear that all of us are in a united organisation that belongs to all South Africans and members of the ANC so we have to work as a collective,” he said.

However, KwaZulu-Natal delegate Bheki Cele blasted his province for its bad behaviour on Friday.

Some sections of KZN delegates hackled and hauled President Cyril Ramaphosa chanting “Phala-Phala” and when Chairperson Gwede Mantashe tried to calm them down they banged tables saying “Awubuyi” (you are not coming back) at his position.

“Personally I did speak with the leadership of KZN both the Secretary and the Chair (Siboniso Duma) and Secretary (Bheki Mtolo) I’m very glad they went to speak to the delegates and say ‘this is not the way’ but it was ugly and remember we were sitting in front and it wasn’t looking good at all,” Cele who is also the Police Minister said.

The 80 National Executive Committee members list is yet to be completed.
