The Department Psychology of Education, chairperson at Unisa, Professor Ramodungoane Tabane has encouraged Grade 12 pupils who didn’t perform well in their matric results to persevere.

There are 80,1% of matric learners who passed while about 20% failed their matric examination.

Tabane said pupils need to “analyse” their results in “in-depth” and work on improving their marks.

“It is all about taking stock of your marks. Engaging with them now and not thinking in-terms of I could have, I would have and I should have,” said Tabane.

Tabane also encouraged failed matric learners to get psychological support because sound mental health is crucial.

“It is very important for learners to know that they are being supported whatever route or whatever way they go. Because mental health is very important and it is a serious condition. Because at times, failure can trigger other mental disorders: depression, anxiety and all that,” said Tabane.
