Orlando Pirates’ new coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, has led the sea robbers to a convincing 2-0 victory against Polokwane in the MTN8 quarter-finals held at the sold-out Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon. This impressive performance secured Pirates a spot in their fourth consecutive MTN8 semi-final, heightening hopes of capturing a record-extending fourth crown this season.

Ouaddou’s inaugural match at the helm marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Buccaneers, and the team’s cohesive performance was a promising sign that the coach is settling into his role. Following a successful three-year spell under former coach Jose Riveiro, this victory must have eased some of the pressure on the new tactician as he embarks on a quest for silverware.

The Pirates showcased a spirited display that appeared to align with Ouaddou’s ambitions for the season, although they did exhibit some worrying gaps, particularly in the defensive midfield and forward positions. The emergence of new players adapting to the squad, however, is a positive note for Ouaddou, who faces high expectations in challenging for every title this year.

Showing intent from the outset, Pirates took a commanding 2-0 lead into the break thanks to goals from Oswin Appollis and Patrick Maswangayi. The attacking trio of Appollis, Sipho Mbule, and Relebohile Mofokeng dazzled throughout, providing a visually appealing performance that delighted the Ghost fans in attendance. Mbule, aptly nicknamed ‘Master Chef’, played a vital role, serving up delectable through balls that kept Polokwane’s defence on guard.

Having faced challenges with discipline at previous clubs, Mbule’s seamless integration into the Pirates squad was a reassuring sight for the supporters. Supporting him, Mofokeng also displayed his silky skills, cementing his reputation as a rising star in South African football.

Despite their strong start, the Buccaneers recognised a need for a more prolific goalscorer to capitalise on their impressive build-up play. Striker Boitumelo Radiopane, who appeared rejuvenated under Ouaddou, faced difficulties in timing his runs, yet he played a pivotal role in the build-up to Appollis’s opening goal. The attacker eluded his markers, finding space on the edge of the box before setting Appollis up for a curling shot that eluded Polokwane’s keeper Brian Wire.

Despite Polokwane’s attempts to equalise, their long ball strategy posed little threat to Pirates’ resolute defence. A consequential moment came as Appollis was fouled in the box by Monty Batlhabane, leading to Maswangayi converting a penalty and providing a jubilant response from the fans as they chanted the player’s name.

As the match unfolded, Ouaddou remained animated on the sideline, pacing like an expectant parent waiting for a newborn. His team’s defensive steadiness allowed him to introduce fresh talents such as Yanela Mbuthuma, Tshepang Moremi, and Abdoulaye Mariko, who all made their debuts and contributed to preserving the lead.

With the MTN8 quarter-final in the books, the Buccaneers are now poised to redirect their focus to the upcoming Betway Premiership clash against Sekhukhune. With the foundation laid in this successful outing, Orlando Pirates will look to build on this momentum as they aim for a fruitful campaign under the guidance of their new coach, Ouaddou.
