The civil rights organisation, AfriForum has alleged that the murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was an assassination and not a robbery gone wrong and that the five men on trial for his killing are the right suspects.
AfriForum Spokesperson Barry Bateman said the so-called ‘second docket’ has no bearing whatsoever in this case and should be disregarded entirely.
“We believe, AfriForum private prosecution believes that the docket that is being used in the prosecution of this case is the correct one. We believe it is not a robbery gone wrong based on the briefing our investigating officers had prior to the trial that this is in fact an assassination.
“We hope that further evidence will be presented that will help the public understand what really went on that night. We believe what is being presented so far, particularly this week, goes a long way to confirming what we believe to be the case on that night,” Bateman said.
“We are certainly encouraged by the pace in which the trial has commenced following what has been a very long road particularly for Senzo Meyiwa’s loved ones. The development in court related to calls between the accused and Kelly Khumalo, we believe is a very strong indication of the direction that the state might be heading where it puts together a picture like a mosaic.
“All the little pieces put together to create what we believe and this is something that Advocates Gerrie Nel said from the very beginning, that we don’t believe that this is a robbery gone wrong. We believed that this is an assassination that we are dealing with and with every assassination there needs to be a mastermind. So this could be the direction the state is moving in and we are glad that we finally reached that point.”
Bateman said there are “individuals” who need to account for the Meyiwa killing.
“But what it has done is, it has certainly raised many questions that need to be answered by certain individuals and we hope that point will come eventually in this trial”.
