Al-Ahly defeated Pyramids 2-1 in overtime on Monday to win the Egypt Cup for a record-breaking 38th time. This brought an end to a competition that had begun more than 500 days earlier.
The domestic cup competition for the 2021–22 season got underway on November 9 of that year, but the final wasn’t held until February of this year because of a backlog of fixtures brought on by international competitions and continental club competitions.
Fans finally got to watch their teams compete for the trophy in Cairo on Monday, 517 days after the early rounds began, thanks to Al-Ahly’s involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup.
After Moroccan Walid El Karti gave Pyramids the lead after 72 minutes, they appeared to be headed for their first-ever championship, but Mahmoud Kahraba tied the score three minutes later.
In the 105th minute, Hamdi Fathy scored with a header to give Al-Ahly the Cup.
Coach Marcel Koehler of Al-Ahly remarked, “I am happy to see the fans in the stands and their support for us. I dedicate the cup title to them and promise to win more titles in the future.”
Authorities authorized 10,000 tickets at Cairo Stadium for supporters of each club, but the area for Pyramids fans seemed nearly completely vacant.
