State witness and police officer Constable, Sizwe Zungu has placed all the five men accused of killing Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa, at Sotho Hostel in Vosloorus on the day of his murder on 26 October 2014.

Zungu, who is attached to Visible Policing at Sebenza Police Station in Edenvale, was testifying at the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday and told the court that the five men on trial were at Sotho Hostel in Vosloorus the night Meyiwa was shot and killed.

He told the court that he (Zungu) arrived with his relative identified only as Makhosonke at the hostel where they drank and had a good time.

“I arrived with Makhosonke and he informed me that he had a bottle of Jameson. We started drinking and we ate meat,” said Zungu.

Zungu said when he arrived accused Number 1, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, accused Number 2, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, accused Number 3, Mthobisi Prince Mncube and accused number 5, Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli were also at the hostel.

“Accused 1 was there, accused Number 2 was there, accused Number 3  was there and accused Number 5 was there when I arrived,” said Zungu.

But he said he didn’t see them for a while but later they returned looking like they were in shock

The police officer said between 20:30 and 21:30 he was sitting in the main room which is a common area at the hostel when accused 1, 2 and 3, rushed into the room of a man whom he said was his brother’s son identified only as Gwabini (Zungu’s brother’s son).

Zungu said he followed them into Gwabini’s room where he saw accused Number 1, Sibiya with a 38 revolver while accused Number 3, Mncube was in possession of a 9 mm pistol.

Previous witnesses have testified that Mcube was found in possession of a 9mm pistol when he was arrested for a taxi violence-related crime in 2015 to which he was convicted.

Last month, Lieutenant Colonel Christian Mangena told court that he was able to establish that the bullet projectile that was found on the crime scene was fired from the same gun that was found in Mcube’s possession.

Zungu said he started shouting at Gwabini when he saw the firearms that prompted accused 4, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and accused five 5, Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli to come in and ask if everything was okay.

“As I was shouting at Gwabini, the accused Number 5 came in wearing a black jacket. He then asked Gwabini if there was a problem. Then Gwabini said there was no problem. When he came in he was in the company of accused number 4,” said Zungu.

Zungu also revealed that in 2019 his life was threatened by a relative of accused 1, Sibiya and accused 5, Ntuli who confronted him and pointed a firearm at him.

He said  he reported the matter to a top policeman and also informed him that he suspected the men on trial were responsible for Meyiwa’s murder.

Meyiwa was shot and killed with a 9 mm pistol at the home of his singer girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo 26 October, the court has heard evidence to that effect.

All five men have pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a license and possession of ammunition.

The trial continues.
