Manchester United have announced the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim, ending his spell at Old Trafford just over a year after his appointment, as the club looks to revive its Premier League campaign.
In a statement released on Monday, United confirmed that Amorim has left his role with immediate effect. The Portuguese coach was appointed in November 2024 during a period of transition at the club and was tasked with steadying performances while laying the foundations for a long-term rebuild.
One of the highlights of Amorim’s tenure came in Europe, where he guided United to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May. The run to the final marked a significant achievement for a club that has struggled to consistently compete at the latter stages of European competitions in recent seasons and briefly raised hopes that momentum could be carried into domestic football.
However, league form has proved more erratic. United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, outside the automatic Champions League qualification places. While still within reach of the top four, the club’s leadership has concluded that a change in the technical area offers the best chance of improving results in the remainder of the season.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the statement said, adding that the move is aimed at securing “the highest possible Premier League finish”.
Amorim’s departure is the latest chapter in a period of managerial instability at Old Trafford, as the club continues its search for sustained success both domestically and in Europe. Since the post–Sir Alex Ferguson era, United have frequently changed coaches in an effort to return to the top of English football, often balancing short-term results with longer-term rebuilding plans.
Despite the abrupt end to his tenure, the club paid tribute to Amorim’s contribution, thanking him for his work and wishing him well in the future.
Former United midfielder and current first-team coach Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the team in Wednesday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley. The club is expected to begin assessing its options for a permanent head coach as the season progresses.
