The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that it will take disciplinary action against suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu, and member of parliament, Malusi Gigaba, for their recent public statements.
This after the two made what the party described as “opportunistic assault” comments on the ANC at the weekend.
Mchunu, who was delivering a speech at the tombstone unveiling ceremony of a former comrade in Machobeni, KwaZulu-Natal, warned that the party risks losing power in the 2026 local government elections unless it regroups.
Gigaba, was quoted in one of the Sunday newspapers, Gigaba was quoted as saying that the party’s National Executive Committee has lost its direction and lambasted the Government of National Unity.
In its response, ANC Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said the members’ comments represent a violation of the party’s protocols.
“Their conduct represents a flagrant violation of ANC internal communication protocols and undermines the fundamental discipline of the movement.
These comrades acted outside of any sanctioned organisational mandate or collective structure, making pronouncements that amounted to deliberate de-campaigning of the ANC.
Their remarks do not reflect the views of any legitimate structure of the movement and must be seen as an opportunistic assault on the collective image, credibility, and cohesion of the African National Congress,” said Bhengu.
In addition, Bhengu said the comments made by the two members, cast aspersions on the character and unity of the ANC, portraying the organisation as divided, incoherent and collapsing.
She also highlighted that their actions are in breach of the party’s established communication protocols.
“Communications in the ANC is a constitutional mandate of the Secretary-General; these powers are entrusted to the National Spokesperson for operational purposes.
Any deviation from this established protocol undermines internal cohesion, unity and renewal,” explained Bhengu.
She says disciplinary action will be taken against Mchunu and Gigaba.
The ANC will take the necessary steps to correct this behaviour, and no comrade will be exempt from the discipline of the organisation which demands unity, discipline, and revolutionary morality from all.
The renewal programme cannot coexist with ill-discipline, we have no tolerance for conduct that seeks to weaken the collective,” warned Bhengu.
