In a critical manoeuvre aimed at addressing the mounting tensions within the Government of National Unity (GNU), African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has confirmed a dedicated session is underway during the ongoing National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg. The urgency of this session is underscored by recent escalations, particularly following the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) dramatic exit from the National Dialogue earlier this week.

The DA’s actions and their expressed intention to vote against various budgets proposed by ANC ministers, citing allegations of corruption, have further strained relations within the coalition. These developments have led to an emerging chorus among some ANC NEC members, who are increasingly calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa to consider expelling the DA from the coalition altogether, raising questions about the longevity and unity of the government.

Amidst this backdrop, Mbalula remained resolute, emphasising that the purpose of the NEC discussions will not be to reassess the coalition’s formation but to identify pressing challenges and develop strategies to strengthen the GNU. “The GNU is a discussion we will focus on. Since we formed the GNU, what are the challenges we are facing and at the same time what is it that needs to be done to strengthen the GNU and what are matters that need urgent attention?” he articulated.

Mbalula’s commitment to the coalition’s integrity is clear. He stated, “If it is on the table, it will arise in the meeting and it will be interrogated strategically. The option we have taken which is the GNU is still intact.” His confidence signals a desire for stability within the coalition, indicating a preference for dialogue over discord.

As the NEC meeting continues, scrutiny remains high on ANC leadership as they navigate these challenges. The ability of the leadership to reconcile differences and reinforce unity within the GNU will be pivotal in determining the future stability of the coalition.
