Arsenal passed their toughest test of the season with an impressive 3–1 win over Bayern München at the Emirates Stadium, handing the German champions their first defeat in all competitions this campaign.Bayern arrived in London unbeaten in 18 matches across all tournaments, having won 10 of their 11 league games, three domestic cup and all four of their Champions League fixtures.

Their dominant run placed them at the top of both the Bundesliga and their Champions League group. But Arsenal’s victory not only ended that streak it also saw the Gunners leapfrog Bayern to take control of the group after winning five out of five.

Arsenal’s Statement PerformanceJurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, rising highest to head home Bukayo Saka’s corner. Bayern responded 10 minutes later through 17-year-old Lennart Karl, who brought the German side level. Arsenal regained control in the second half when Noni Madueke, introduced from the bench, struck to make it 2–1 in the 69th minute.

Gabriel Martinelli then sealed the win eight minutes later, firing in the Gunners’ third to put the result beyond doubt.

Declan Rice: “We’re not thinking about being favourites”Man of the match Declan Rice spoke to CBS Sports, praising the team’s preparation and mentality while downplaying talk that Arsenal are now favourites for the Champions League title.

“Immediately after we won the derby, the manager showed us how Bayern were going to play. They’re probably the toughest team we’ve played — the way they move, the way their wingers come inside, and the way their defenders follow you forces you to think constantly. With or without the ball, we knew exactly what to do.

”Despite the growing hype around Arsenal’s performances this season, Rice insisted the squad is staying grounded.

“To be honest, we’re not thinking about being favourites to win everything. We’re just playing each match the best way we can.

”He also admitted the team has taken on a more aggressive edge this season.

“There’s anger in how we play this season. You saw it in the derby. We have fire. We’re doing everything we can to win, but there’s still a long way to go.

”On his individual form, Rice added: “I’m probably playing the best football of my career. I’m fit. I’m happy.”

Elsewhere in the Champions LeagueEnglish champions Liverpool’s struggles continued with a heavy 4–1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven. Real Madrid won a thriller 4–3 against Olympiacos, with Kylian Mbappé scoring a hat-trick, including three goals in seven minutes. Atlético Madrid ended Inter Milan unbeaten run in the competition with 2–1 win, while Paris Saint-Germain defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5–3 in an action-packed contest.
