In an unexpected move, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) has replaced its president, Vuyo Zungula, by appointing Professor Caesar Nongqunga as the new president.
Zungula has been leading the party since its inception seven years ago, helping the party garner representation at local, provincial and national government legislatures.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to President Zungula for his remarkable service over the past seven years.
His visionary leadership has been instrumental in registering the party, advocating for the voiceless, and firmly establishing the ATM on the political landscape of South Africa.
Under President Zungula’s stewardship, the ATM has grown from its modest beginnings to a formidable force, advocating for economic transformation and the upliftment of the marginalized communities across our nation,” read a statement from the party.
The ATM highlighted that Zungula will continue with his role as a party leader in parliament.
The party welcomed Professor Nongqunga into his new role, adding that he has a profound vision for the ATM and has confidence in his leadership.
“Professor Nongqunga is not only a leader but also a beacon of hope for many.
His commitment to establishing true democracy and holistic liberation encompasses the creation of a conducive environment for physical, psychological, social, socio-economic, and spiritual growth for citizens.
His extensive experience in both leadership and community service, building houses, initiating agricultural projects, providing educational funding, and creating jobs, reflects his dedication to uplifting those in need,” explained the statement.
The party is adamant that the decision made by its National Executive Committee to separate the roles of party advocacy and organizational building will greatly benefit it.
“With Professor Nongqunga focusing on party leadership and growth, and honourable Zungula concentrating on parliamentary leadership, we are poised for a new era of growth and effectiveness.
This strategic division allows us to address the multifaceted challenges we face with renewed vigour and clarity of purpose,” said the party.
According to the party, Professor Nongqunga holds multiple degrees including a Doctor of Theology and a Doctor of Religious Education, alongside qualifications in civil engineering and business administration.
