As the City of Johannesburg grapples with the staggering rise in illegal informal settlements, Mayor Dada Morero has issued an urgent plea to politicians, the private sector, and civil society to unite in addressing a more pressing crisis: the escalating levels of homelessness. In his recent statements, Mayor Morero described the city’s critical shortage of temporary housing, revealing that Johannesburg is struggling to comply with legal mandates requiring municipalities to provide shelter for homeless individuals, as well as those living in hijacked buildings and unlawful informal settlements, before any evictions occur. This has left many vulnerable citizens without adequate options…
Former ANC MP Boy Mamabolo has vowed to keep trying to register a political party after the IEC this week turned down his application. The electoral body cited possible confusion flowing from Mamabolo’s use of the name of late struggle icon Nelson Mandela which it believes he has no claim to. “The IEC clarifies that the party ‘Mandela for President’ applied for registration, but was rejected for non-compliance with signature requirements and the threshold of required registered voters. Furthermore, the name ‘Mandela for President’ with associated green and black colours may be construed by voters as connected to founding President…

Whitfield had gone on the trip without Ramaphosa’s permission. “After careful reflection, I have taken the decision to step down as Spokesperson on International Relations for the Democratic Alliance.…
An interest group opposing reforms at the Road Accident Fund has taken aim at Transport Minister Barbara Creecy suggesting she’s clueless about what she’s trying to do. The attack comes after Creecy reintroduction of the Road Accident Benefit Scheme, a bill aimed at reforming the RAF by among others enabling it to operate as a typical social benefit scheme which pays benefits directly without having to be sued, just like SASSA (South African Social Security Agency). The Association for the Protection of Road Accident Victims, APRAV briefed the media in Pretoria on Wednesday where it announced planned opposition to the…

The City of Tshwane has expressed concern about littering in the Pretoria CBD as well as other areas around the capital. Authorities have found widespread littering even in areas where there are dustbins. The same pattern has been observed with regards to urinating, that people, mostly men, would pee anywhere and everywhere including next to public toilets but never inside the toilets. “The hawkers who sell around here are contributing to this area being dirty. As you can see people who sell food all dump their water and their leftovers in this drain and that’s the reason why this drain keeps on…
