Former President Thabo Mbeki has expressed confidence that the ANC will be returned to power during the upcoming National and Provincial elections. Mbeki started his election campaign for the ruling party at Jabulani Mall after a decade and half absence since his removal from office in 2008. The cash-strapped City of Tshwane is adamant it will end reliance on Eskom. Mayor Celliers Brink announced during his State of the City address that the municipality is looking at entering into deals with independent power producers whom he said are more reliable than the state-owned Eskom. The IEC has defended its decision to approach the Constitutional Court seeking “clarity” on the implications of an Electoral Court judgment nullifying its decision to bar former President Jacob Zuma from running in the upcoming elections.
