The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has recalled two batches of Benylin Paediatric Syrup, after high levels of diethylene glycol were detected in a batch of the Syrup. Diethylene glycol is toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal. Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headaches, altered mental state, and acute kidney injury which may lead to death. The African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa said he has no regrets in granting his predecessor Jacob Zuma remission of sentence. Sibanye-Stillwater has announced that talks for the retrenchment of more than 4000 employees and contractors at its South African gold operations. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has lodged an urgent and direct appeal to the Constitutional Court to challenge the Electoral Court judgment that set aside its decision to bar former President Jacob Zuma from contesting this year’s elections. For the first time in sporting history, athletes who win a gold medal at this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, will be awarded $50,000, about R940 866. This was announced by the World Athletics, becoming the first international federation to award money at an Olympic Games, for athletes who achieve the pinnacle of sporting success. Tensions are rising in the so-called ‘multi-party charter’ a pre-election pact aimed at unseating the ANC and preventing a possible EFF takeover. South Africa has welcomed the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) adoption of a resolution calling for Israel to be held accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip and demanding a halt to all arms sales to the country. This is the first time that any top UN body has taken such a resolution since the conflict between Hamas and Israel escalated six-months ago.
