Due to allegations that it was chosen in an unlawfully organised conference in August of last year, the recently elected ANC North West provincial executive committee (PEC) is currently facing legal challenges. The conference was not conducted in accordance with the ANC’s guidelines and constitution, according to five party members in the province who have petitioned the high court in Mahikeng for relief. They argue that the court should declare the conference, as well as any decisions or resolutions it produced, to be illegal and toss them out. All facets of South Africa’s society have suffered as a result of the severe energy crisis. Regular and protracted power outages, which first appeared in 2007, are also driving an increase in crime, particularly street violence. The most recent quarterly crime numbers have endangered the state of the struggling economy, food security, and health and educational results. Power outages were clearly a contributing factor in all robbery categories significantly increasing from July to September 2022 compared to the same time in 2021. The worst power outages the nation has ever seen occurred at the same time. Additionally, the police service’s yearly crime statistics for the years 2012/13 through 2021/22 reveals that 2015 saw an initial increase in robberies. Insurance firms believe there is a direct correlation between power outages and property crime in more affluent neighbourhoods based on data from claims. Furthermore, an increasing number of reports from both wealthy and impoverished regions of the…

Dr Danny Buckley Being paid for work in cash is often frowned upon in the UK. It can be seen as a way of avoiding tax, or cheating the system, and detrimental to economic growth. Others say it is unfair to those who rely on cash-in-hand work, who may receive a low wage and have little in the way of employment rights (like holiday or sick pay) and job security. Yet cash-in-hand work still makes up a significant proportion of economic activity in the UK. Some estimate that it is worth around 10% of GDP, or around £223 billion. And…
The recent announcement by the City of Cape Town that it will soon be able to pay for own-generated solar power to be fed back into the local grid is good news for the city’s property market, says Brent Townes, commercial property chief operating officer for Lew Geffen Sotheby’s in Cape Town. According to Townes, the move should see a jump in property values – specifically for the city’s commercial, industrial and retail property sectors, which have the space to become big energy providers. On 24 January, the mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, said that the city was now exempt…

After the courts allowed for the publication of papers pertaining to the African National Congress’s (ANC) cadre deployment program, the Democratic Alliance (DA) declared a “historic” win. The court ruled that the ANC’s refusal to make public its minutes, whatsapp discussions, emails, CVs, and other data of its cadre deployment committee was “illegal and illegitimate” and that it had no justification for doing so. The DA has argued before the court that the cadre deployment committee of the ANC’s records were necessary since its rules and procedures impacted who was assigned to important state institutions. The application’s author, Leon Schreiber…
