Eskom is threatening court action against 10 North West’s municipalities not paying their debt to the power utility estimated at R5.4 billion . The Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality owes more than R100 million and is the latest municipality that Eskom is going after. The North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi says more than R1 billion will be used to address infrastructure challenges at schools by renovating or building new structures. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has confirmed two cases of diphtheria in two different provinces. According to the NICD, the first case was of an adult in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the second was of an infant in the Western Cape, both cases were detected in April. The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has expressed concerns about the continuous shortage of medical doctors, while more than 800 doctors are unemployed. SAMA’s Chairperson, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa said the public healthcare system is failing to create internships for doctors who studied locally and those who studied outside the country. “There were 827 medical doctors that were unemployed at the time of conducting the survey in February 2023. Following the announcement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) of an outbreak of mumps in South Africa, the North West Department of Health has confirmed 342 cases of the virus and warned that more cases could be recorded.
