The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane said she’s confident that the appointment of a new National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board, will help turnaround the situation at the scheme. The scheme was placed under administration in April last year, by the Department’s former Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande after dissolving the previous board due to alleged incompetence. The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) has in its recent study, found sexual harassment to be increasingly high at Institutions of Higher Learning in the country. The study was conducted at three institutions comprising Nelson Mandela University, North West University and Sol Plaatje University. “Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant challenge in South Africa due to entrenched patriarchal and sexist attitudes. The North West MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Madoda Sambatha, is optimistic that the lifting of vegetable exports from South Africa to Botswana, will boost trade for local farmers. The ban was imposed on 16 vegetables back in December 2021 and came into effect in January 2022. Botswana attributed the decision to the promotion of self-sufficient food security and the protection of local producers. The International Boxing Association (IBA) has announced plans to take legal action against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the inclusion of Algeria and Taiwan fighters, Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. The association expressed concern that the IOC cleared the fighters to participate at the Olympics, after allegedly failing gender eligibility tests and were excluded from the IBA’s 2023 Championships.
