Bafana Bafana’s AFCON dreams on the line after narrow defeat to Egypt

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana face a decisive final group match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Egypt on Friday night. Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty proved the difference, handing the Pharaohs maximum points and top spot in Group B.

Hugo Broos’ side, who opened with a 2-1 win over Angola on 22 December, now sit on three points. Angola and Zimbabwe, who played out a 1-1 draw earlier on Friday, each have one point.

Bafana must beat Zimbabwe on Monday in Marrakech to guarantee progression to the knockout stage, though a draw could still suffice depending on goal difference and other results.

The loss sparked heated online debates among South African fans. Some accused Kaizer Chiefs supporters of undue criticism towards the squad, which features a heavy contingent from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. Critics pointed to lingering resentment over Broos’ consistent omission of Chiefs players from national team call-ups.

Amakhosi fans fired back, insisting they fully support the national team but have legitimate concerns over tactics and selections.

Broos has long defended his choices, prioritising form and team balance amid ongoing club rivalries.

As tension builds ahead of the crucial Zimbabwe clash, South Africa hopes to unite behind the team and secure a place in the last 16.
