The state intensified its case against Muzi Sibiya, accused number one in the 2014 murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, by presenting bank transaction records that allegedly place him in Gauteng just months before the fatal shooting.
During cross-examination at the Pretoria High Court, prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi submitted evidence from three bank cards registered under Sibiya’s name, aiming to dismantle the accused’s alibi that he was in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) from 2013 to 2015.
Key transactions included:
- A withdrawal on February 2, 2014, at Naledi Shopping Centre in Katlehong, Gauteng.
- Another withdrawal the following day, February 3, 2014, at Nongoma Hardware Centre ATM in Richards Bay, KZN.
Baloyi argued the rapid movement between provinces contradicts Sibiya’s claim of continuous residence in KZN during this period.
Sibiya, however, maintained that all cards were in the possession of Mbali Moyo, the mother of his child, whom he had entrusted with the accounts for child maintenance since 2013. He testified that Moyo had full access and used the cards freely, including in Gauteng.
“I gave her the card when I left for KZN. She was using it for the child,” Sibiya told the court.
The accused further stated he only used the card during occasional visits to Gauteng and could not differentiate between his and Moyo’s transactions after more than a decade.
The state also referenced a July 2014 withdrawal near Boksburg Prison, reinforcing its narrative of Sibiya’s presence in Gauteng leading up to Meyiwa’s murder on October 26, 2014, at the home of singer Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus.
Sibiya and four co-accused face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition.
Cross-examination of Sibiya continues, with the defense challenging the admissibility of uncertified bank documents.
