US President Joe Biden is appealing for calm, following the attempted assassination of his predecessor, Donald Trump.

“The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down. Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy. It’s part of human nature.  But politics must never be a literal battlefield, and, God forbid, a killing field,” said Biden in his address to the nation.

Biden then blamed the attack on several previous incidents, including the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the attack and several threats on US officials and election officials.

He also highlighted that Trump is in good health.

“I’ve been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government about the situation based on what we know now.  I have tried to get a hold of the Donald.  He’s with his doctors. Apparently, he is doing well.  I plan on talking to him shortly, I hope, when I get back to the telephone,” explained Biden.

Meanwhile, Trump was quoted in the media, describing his assassination attempt as a ‘very surreal experience’ and praised the Secret Service for killing the shooter.

“I’m not supposed to be here. I’m supposed to be dead. They took him out with one shot right between the eyes,” said Trump who was enroute to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention.

Regarding the photo where he’s raising a fist with a bloodied face, Trump described it as iconic.

“A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen  They’re right and I didn’t die. Usually, you have to die to have an iconic picture,” joked Trump.
