Broos to field strong team against Algeria

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said he will field a strong team against Algeria, when both teams meet in the FIFA International Series in Algiers.

This after a poor showing by Bafana Bafana second string squad which played to a 1-1 draw against lowly-ranked Andorra last week in Annaba.

“If you compare Andorra with Algeria, there’s lots of difference in quality. We need to put our best team on Tuesday. We cannot afford to experiment again. Also, players who did not play on Thursday will not be tired, and they will be fresh to play.

“It will be a difficult game, certainly and we all know they have quality,” said Broos.

The coach said he’s aware that there has been disillusion and disappointment in Algeria, after the team was knocked out of the AFCON in Ivory Coast.

According to Broos, the team seems to be improving from that disappointment, based on their performance with Bolivia.

“They have a new coach, and they want to show him that they deserve to be in the team, and they want to play.

“So, motivation will be big especially because they play at home, and the stadium was nearly full. It will be a good test for us after AFCON,” explained the coach.

Broos also bemoaned the lack of a quality striker for Bafana Bafana, adding that the team has missed many opportunities in the past.

He hinted that the Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners will start the game, ahead of Khanyisa Mayo, who was less impressive during the Andorra match.

“This has been a problem for several years already in South African Football, that we don’t really have the big scorer, even when there are guys who score rather easily in the local competition.

“You see Mayo with eight goals, Rayners also has something like that, so we’ll see about Iqraam on Tuesday, he will play.

“But everybody has to know that those international games are one or two levels higher than the PSL, it’s not easy to score,” highlighted Broos.

Broos said he’s hopeful that Burnley striker Lyle Foster and Evidence Makgopa will be ready during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

The kick-off for the match is Tuesday night at 11pm, SA time.
