Chiefs misery continues with painful defeat in Richards Bay

Chiefs misery continues as Kaizer Chiefs slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Richards Bay FC in their Betway Premiership clash at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.

In what was their first-ever appearance in Richards Bay, Amakhosi failed to rise to the occasion, undone by Thulani Gumede’s 69th-minute strike that sealed all three points for the hosts.

There had been early promise. Chiefs started brightly, pinning the Natal Rich Boyz inside their own half in the opening exchanges. Lebohang Maboe and Asanele Velebayi both had efforts blocked as the visitors forced a string of early corners, looking determined to silence the home crowd.

But as the half wore on, the game dissolved into a bruising midfield battle. Despite the industrious efforts of Sibongiseni Mthethwa on his return from injury, clear-cut chances were scarce. Aden McCarthy and Gaston Sirino both missed the target with headers before the break, while Bruce Bvuma was called into action to keep the scores level.

The second half proved even more frustrating.

A costly slip by Bradley Cross allowed Richards Bay to pounce. Sanele Barns broke free down the right and squared for Gumede, who calmly wrong-footed the scrambling defence before steering the ball past Bvuma.

From there, Chiefs’ response lacked cutting edge. For all their urgency, they failed to register a single shot on target in the second half  a statistic that underlined their growing struggles in front of goal.

The defeat leaves Amakhosi in fifth place on 30 points after 18 matches a position that offers little comfort to supporters who expect far more from a club of this stature.

With a home fixture against Durban City looming on 15 March, the Glamour Boys will need to find answers quickly. For now, the frustration lingers, and the faithful are left hoping that this painful chapter will soon give way to brighter days.
