Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have advanced to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.
Pirates had to work hard for their victory, after beating a stubborn SuperSport United 5-4 on penalties, after both teams were deadlocked at 2-2 draw after extra-time at the Old Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.
Mbekezeli Mbokazi put the defending champions ahead in the 29th minute when he scored his first goal for the senior team.
Matsantsantsa’s Terrence Dzvukamanja capitalised on a mistake by the Buccaneers goalkeeper Sipho Chaine in the 43rd minute to equalise matters.
The celebrations were however short-lived, when Evidence Makgopa found the back of the net at the stroke of halftime, to restore Pirate’s lead.
SuperSport again left it late in the second half, when Gape Moralo’s individual brilliance saw him equalise in the 92nd minute, with only three minutes of additional time remaining.
Both teams failed to settle the matter extra-time, and the match headed to the dreaded penalties.
Goodman Mosele was Pirates hero as scored the winning penalty, to ensure that the team gets another chance to defend the title.
Meanwhile at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, Kaizer Chiefs registered an emphatic 3-1 win over Stellenbosch FC to advance to the semi-finals of the elusive cup.
Amakhosi’s first goal was scored by Miguel Inacio who converted a penalty in the 19th minute.
Stellies Andre De Jong broke Chiefs fans hearts in the 87th minute when he equalised to make it 1-1.
But Pule Mmodi and Mfundo Vilakazi scored two late goals to ensure that Amakhosi advance to the semi-finals of the cup.
Meanwhile, the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville was postponed, as the venue was double booked.
According to the Premier Soccer League, the stadium was hosting the under-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier.
“The League will deal responsibly with the rescheduling of the match in compliance with the law and the League Compliance Manual and the public will be kept informed.
All supporters who purchased match tickets are urged to keep them safe for use on the rescheduled fixture date, which will be announced in due course,” read a statement from the league.
Only one match is scheduled for Sunday, when Durban City host Marumo Gallants at the Chatsworth Stadium.
