Kaizer Chiefs has officially announced Nasreddine Nabi as the team’s head coach.
This after the 58-year-old Tunisian was shown on the club’s website, greeting the players and addressing them at a pre-season camp in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Sunday.
“I believe we have done all the work to ensure that we have the right team, the right coach to make sure that we take Chiefs to the next level.
We are looking forward to his work and that of the team he has assembled, new and older players that are with the squad.
We looked at a number of things, the right coach would have coached around the continent, who understands the Chiefs brand and where we want to go.
A coach who has the hunger and passion for success and the Chiefs brand.
I must say well done to the Sporting Director and the entire team for the extensive work they did in scouting the world,” said Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung, during a media briefing in Johannesburg.
Nabi was on the books of AS FAR Rabat in Morocco last season where he led the team to second place in the league.
He also had stints with Tanzania’s Young Africans, Al-Ahly Benghazi from Libya, and Ismaily from Egypt amongst others.
According to Motaung, it was not an easy decision to appoint the Tunisian-born coach, as they looked at a number of coaches in the continent and globally
“It’s not about hitting the ground, but it’s about doing the things right and building continued success.
We all want success, but we all know that if you want success, you must do everything properly,” explained Motaung.
Regarding the future of their long-standing goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, Motaung said high-level talks are underway regarding his future at the club.
“We are certainly in discussions with Khune, but the club will make announcements.
It’s been 25 years, and he is like a little brother to me.
We are having discussions around what the opportunities for him are and we are looking forward to announcing that in the future,” explained Motaung.
Khune is not part of the team that is currently in Türkiye.
Meanwhile, Chiefs will play Young Africans from Tanzania in a brand-new annual cup competition, Toyota Cup, which will be played at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday 28 July at 15H00.
