Chloe Tryon urges Proteas Women to up their game

Proteas all-rounder Chloe Tryon has challenged the team to improve its performance during their next game against Sri Lanka in Colombo at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup on Friday.

This despite beating Bangladesh by three wickets on Monday, to register another nail-biting win after beating India by three wickets last week Thursday.

Tryon, who was named Player of the Match, after scoring 69-ball 62 (6 fours, 1 six), said she’s optimistic that the team will get its house in order soon.

“It’s just nice to find ways to get over the line, I know it’s been two tight games but we’re still finding ways to get over the line, which is very exciting for this team. We still have a long way to go in this competition. We haven’t played our perfect game yet, but we’re slowly getting there,” said Tryon.

The all-rounder cited lack of partnership as one of the main reasons that has seen the team struggle in India.

“With India, the crowd put pressure on us, but we stuck with our game and built partnership with the teammates. In a tournament like this, you won’t be betting as long as you can but will be helped by a good partnership. I’ve been at my third or fourth World Cup, so I have a lot of experience on that, but just knowing that the longer you bet, the easier it can get. So just grinding a little bit more at the beginning,” explained Tryon.

She said the team played good cricket in the first 20 overs, but however lost focus as the wicket progressed.

“We were just searching more for wickets instead of just keeping it nice and tight and creating pressure. We let it go a little bit which was unfortunate, something we can reflect on and hopefully rectify in the next game,” remarked Tryon.

She cautioned that Friday’s match in Colombo won’t be an easy one, as the past two wins have put the team under tremendous pressure.

Tryon said something must change in their next game, and they must go back to the drawing board.

“We have a big game against Sri Lanka in Colombo, we know what they bring, we must be disciplined in all aspects of our game. We have good plans; it’s just probably not executing them as much.  Sometimes we must just keep it nice and simple. It’s just the plan that has not been working, but for me, I think it will be executed,” remarked the all-rounder.

The Proteas are now in third place in the standings with six points, ahead of Friday’s clash in Colombo.
