In a shocking move, Clinton Larsen has resigned as the coach of Magesi FC, live on television. He made the announcement during a post-match press conference immediately after losing 3-0 to a Carling All Stars team in the Carling Black Label Cup at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The match pitted the All-Stars team and the Carling Knockout champions.“It is my last game today with Magesi Football ClubAnd I just want to thank everybody, the players. I want to thank my technical team and management as well as our Chairman, Dr Solly Makhubela for giving me the honour of leading this project for the past two years. I really want to thank them for it and wish them everything of the best moving forward,” said Larsen in a post-match interview on Super Sport TV.The Durban-born coach said the decision is based purely on the team’s performance in the Betway Premiership. The team is currently languishing at the bottom of the league and struggling to duplicate the winning formula that saw it crowned Carling Knockout Cup champions in November. He acknowledged that the news would come as a shock to the players and the team. “Time will tell how they take it, some may be happy, some not. I know a lot of my players won’t be happy. But you know, they are strong men, they’ll get over it and they’ll continue to try and do the club proud,” explained the coach. Larsen joined the club in the 2023/24 season when it was campaigning gin the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and guided the Limpopo based team to the Premiership. Moreover, Larsen said the team needs a fresh start, as it has only managed to register one win out of nine games, with three draws and five losses. “What I’m affording the club at the moment to do is an opportunity to bring in a fresh leadership, fresh voice, fresh energy, and hopefully take the team to greater heights,” said the coach. Regarding the game, Larsen said they lost to a better team, which composed of players from Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and other PSL teams. “We looked a bit flat today, seven away games in a row with all the traveling. I think it’s taken its toll on the players, no excuse. We lost to a way, way better team today, but I just want to keep thanking my players for everything they’ve done,” added Larsen.
